چکیده

Methods We enrolled 40 patients admitted over a period of 6 months with moderate to severe traumatic brain injury to the Department of Critical Care Medicine at the Alexandria Main University Hospital. ONSD measurements were performed by means of transorbital sonography daily for 7 days. Marshall and Rotterdam head CT neuroimaging scales were recorded on admission, 48 hours and 5 to 7 days later. Glasgow Outcome Scale (GOS) was assessed six months after discharge for survivors.

Optic nerve sheath diameter on initial brain CT, raised intracranial pressure and mortality after severe TBI: an interesting link needing confirmation

Optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) enlargement on initial computed tomography (CT) scan has been found to be associated with increased mortality after severe traumatic brain injury. This could offer the possibility to detect patients with raised intracranial pressure requiring urgent therapeutic interventions and/or invasive intracranial monitoring to guide the treatment. The method to measure ...

Association between optic nerve sheath diameter and mortality in patients with severe traumatic brain injury.

PURPOSE Increased intracranial pressure (ICP) is associated with worse outcomes following traumatic brain injury (TBI). Studies have confirmed that ICP is correlated with optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) on ultrasound. The aim of our study was to assess the independent relationship between ONSD measured using CT and mortality in a population of patients admitted with severe TBI. METHODS We ...

Optic nerve sonography in the diagnostic evaluation of adult brain injury

INTRODUCTION The optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) may be increased in brain-injured patients, especially children, with intracranial hypertension. We investigated whether measurements of ONSD correlated with simultaneous noninvasive and invasive measurements of the intracranial pressure (ICP) in brain-injured adults. METHODS Seventy-six critical care patients (58 males; 47 +/- 18 years old)...

Effect of scuba-diving on optic nerve and sheath diameters

Background :There is not any data available about the effect of high bar pressure condition on intracranial pressure. In this study, the effect of diving on the optic nerve and sheath diameters as non-invasive markers of intracranial pressure has been investigated.   Methods : Twenty professional male divers from twenty one volunteers were chosen for this cross-sectional study. Only one perso...

Optic Nerve Sheath Ultrasound for the Bedside Diagnosis of Intracranial Hypertension: Pitfalls and Potential

Raised intracranial pressure is a complication not just of traumatic brain injury and other acute cerebral insults, but also of a number of general medical conditions. Bedside diagnosis can be difficult; early clinical signs may be misinterpreted, and reliance on cross-sectional imaging studies may further delay diagnosis. Ultrasound is a readily available imaging modality in most critical care...
